I've been necessarily a little preoccupied with things that are going on away from the workshop at the moment, but did find some time last week to create this table lamp. It was made out of necessity rather than something to make and sell, as we needed another lamp in our lounge. Ideally, I would have made this from one solid blank but had nothing of the right length and width, so I compromised by taking two similar sized oak blanks and glued them together. I predrilled them both for the cable before gluing up and then left them for 48 hours to ensure the glue was completely dry before mounting the now single piece on the lathe. The last thing I wanted was for nearly 1kg of oak to come off the lathe at 1000 rpm! As insurance, I put a live centre in the tailstock and brought it up to the piece to support it throughout the turning process.
I wanted something at least vaguely vase shaped and I think I achieved it. Also, I made no attempt to disguise the fact that this was made from two pieces of wood and I am happy with the way the grains and figure in the finished turning contrast with each other. Anyway, it was a very satisfactory piece of turning and I was pleased with the outcome.
The lampshade came UnusualGoodsStore on Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/UnusualGoodsStore?ref=shop_sugg_market
I finished it with a combination of silver and gold enhancing waxes to give it a bit of shimmer when the lamp is turned on, topped off with a high gloss finishing wax. All the finishes are made by Hampshire Sheen.
