Back in the workshop today.
I was given a set of spirit dyes for Christmas and I've been anxious to try them ever since, but as the temperature in the workshop was persistently around freezing I really lacked the incentive to stay in there for long enough to turn a bowl, even with the gas heater . But today was the day!
I've never used dyes before so this was very much an experiment. It was likely that they would be more effective on a light coloured wood, so I chose a nice piece of maple that was just crying out to be used. The finished bowl is just under 15 cms wide and about 6cms high.
I could have just stained it in one colour, but that would be boring, wouldn't it? I decided, then, to try blending some colours, taking inspiration from some of the beautiful winter sunrises we have had here in the Fens recently. Once the staining was completed I let it dry for a while before applying a gloss finishing wax and buffing to a shine.
I'm quite pleased with the result and would love to know what anybody reading this thinks.
Unfortunately, after I had finished the bowl I noticed two very fine stress cracks in the side. They are very unlikely to get any worse but it does mean I cannot sell it through my Timberspinner shop on Numonday. Oh well, I'll just have to keep it, then!
