Oak, OK

I had a request from a friend the other day for a yarn bowl. I've made few of these and they seem to be very popular, so it was nice to be given the opportunity to make this particular one. I chose a piece of oak that had a bit of live edge, i.e. still retained part of the outside edge of the tree - minus the bark, as I thought that would make an interesting feature. Sadly, the piece had some internal flaws which didn't make themselves known until I began turning it and it started disintegrating on the lathe. I didn't fancy another trip to the local A&E Dept., so for safety's sake I took it off and prepared another piece. However, there was enough left to safely make the lid.

The completed bowl, with lid, was finished with Hampshire Sheen's silver enhancing wax which subtly highlighted the knot. As a bonus there is also some very attractive grain patterning in this piece, which I am very pleased with and I hope the recipient will be too.
