Variation on a Theme

I've been back in the workshop today and was wondering what to do with a small yew spindle blank that was just begging to be turned - literally - into something.

I've made a few crochet hook sets recently, which have all been circular. Thinking I'd like to do something different, I got out my notepad, scribbled a few sketches and made a few measurements, deciding that this piece of yew could indeed be the basis for a crochet set.

I set about turning this into a cylinder and in so doing they yew yielded up some beautiful figure and colours. I also realised that if I was turning a wooden cylinder it would need feet to stop it rolling away. Obviously! I therefore cut  two slots in the underside and inserted to walnut feet. I chose walnut as it is a strong wood, but also adds a colour contrast to the rather orange tone of the yew. The whole piece has been finished with carnauba wax and buffed to a beautifully soft satin sheen. The metal hooks are made of brushed aluminium and the holder is chrome with a matching yew handle.

This piece is now available in my Numonday.com shop at:  https://www.numonday.com/pro-dashboard/product/edit/3957634/
