Pulling it All Together

Well, I have a couple of things to mention today, which have both had encouraging outcomes for me.

The first of these is a crochet hook set, which I added to my Numonday shop a couple of days ago, and I was amazed that it sold straight away. The base is made from English yew, with a matching handle for the individual hooks, which screw into the holder. I have since been asked for two more, so will be busy getting these made up over the next week, as soon as my new supplies arrive. At least one of the new ones will be made in oak.

The other item was a commission I received from the Bell Tower Captain at one of the local churches. As is often the case these days, there are teams of bellringers who visit different church towers in a district to ring the bells. As I am rapidly learning, bell ringing is a complex business and there is far more to it than just pulling a rope and waiting for the noise. Anyway, long story short, like the rest of us, ringers vary in height (the long and the short!) and the taller ones will often put a turn or two in a rope if it is too long for them. Over the course of ringing, the knot they have created will become tighter and tighter until it can no longer be easily undone, in which case a spike needs to be used to help loosen up the knot.

When it was learnt that I am a woodturner, I was asked if I could make a new spike for the tower where I am currently learning the art of bell ringing. I have to say that I was honoured to be asked and last week I completed this spike in Iroko. I have trimmed it with with gold curtain cord so that it can be hung in the tower ready for use. It now only needs some personalisation to link it to the particular tower where it will be used and then it is complete. I have included the pen in the image to give an idea of scale.

This was a nice little project to work on and I am pleased with the result. I am very happy to accept commissions like this, especially if it's something a little different as I learn something new every time.

Until next time,

BFN
